Our Guide for Parents

When your child receives an autism diagnosis, the questions come fast. What does this mean for their future? How can I help them succeed? Where do I even start? There is a lot of information out there, and not all of it is consistent or reliable.

This page is designed to give you a clear, honest starting point. You will find an overview of ABA therapy, what it can do for your child, what to expect from the process, and practical guidance for navigating the journey ahead.

What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and improving behavior. It focuses on teaching meaningful skills, increasing positive behaviors, and reducing those that interfere with learning and daily life. ABA therapy has been thoroughly researched and is recognized as an evidence-based practice for children with autism. Learn more about ABA therapy.

At its core, ABA therapy relies on three principles:

  • Reinforcement. Positive behaviors are recognized and rewarded, making them more likely to happen again. Over time, reinforcement shifts from tangible rewards to verbal and social praise.
  • Shaping. New skills are taught by breaking them into smaller, manageable steps. Each step builds on the last until the full skill is mastered.
  • Prompting. Therapists provide guidance to help your child achieve a skill, then gradually reduce that support as your child builds independence.

The ABA therapy process

Every ABA program at ATG begins with a comprehensive assessment by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The BCBA evaluates your child’s strengths, challenges, and goals, then builds a personalized treatment plan around them.

Sessions are delivered by Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), working under the direct supervision of the BCBA. Therapy can take place at home, in a clinic, or in the community. Progress is tracked through data collected at every session, and the plan is adjusted as your child grows. To verify provider credentials, visit the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

How ABA therapy helps your child

ABA therapy addresses your child’s development across multiple areas, with benefits that build on each other over time.

Communication skills

Many children with autism struggle to express their needs and connect with others through language. ABA therapy uses techniques like mand training and naturalistic teaching to improve both verbal and non-verbal communication, giving your child more ways to be understood and to understand others.

Social skills

Through structured activities like role-playing and social stories, ABA helps your child learn how to start conversations, respond to social cues, and build friendships. These skills open doors at school, in the community, and throughout life.

Behavior management

When challenging behaviors like tantrums, aggression, or self-injury are present, ABA therapists work to understand what is driving them and build more appropriate responses. Your child learns coping strategies that replace challenging behaviors, creating a safer and calmer environment for everyone.

Independent living skills

ABA therapy helps children master the everyday tasks that support independence: brushing teeth, getting dressed, managing routines, and more. These skills are especially important as your child grows, supporting a successful transition from childhood to adulthood.

Self-confidence and self-esteem

Each skill your child masters through positive reinforcement builds their belief in their own abilities. Over time, that confidence carries into every part of their life.

Problem-solving

ABA helps children learn to analyze situations and identify the right response. This kind of critical thinking is an invaluable skill in school, social settings, and daily life.

Stronger relationships

As your child develops social and communication skills, their relationships with family members and peers grow stronger. Building trust and familiarity with the people around them is one of the most meaningful outcomes of consistent ABA therapy.

What to expect from the ABA therapy process

Starting ABA therapy raises a lot of practical questions. Here are the ones we hear most often from families, along with honest answers.

Will the therapy plan fit my child specifically?

Yes. ABA therapy at ATG is built around each child individually. BCBAs develop plans that align with your child’s unique needs, strengths, and interests. The techniques and activities are varied and adjusted as your child progresses. There is no single program applied the same way to every child.

How involved will I need to be?

ABA therapy is a 24/7 strategy. Your child’s therapist is present for a few hours each day. The consistency that drives progress happens the rest of the time, at home and in everyday life, and that part depends on you.

ATG provides training for parents and caregivers from the start, equipping you with the tools to reinforce what your child learns between sessions. Your child’s BCBA will walk you through the treatment plan before sessions begin, explain how it will be implemented, and stay available to answer questions throughout.

Everyone in your child’s life benefits from being trained in the strategies being used. That includes grandparents, nannies, and older siblings. If a grandparent is the primary caregiver several days a week, ATG will work to schedule sessions when they are present. Consistency across all caregivers and settings is one of the strongest predictors of your child’s progress.

The time and effort invested early in therapy pays off in the long run. Parents who engage fully at the start typically see fewer challenging behaviors over time, not more demands on their attention. Be open with your child’s therapist about what is working at home and what is not. If something is not fitting into your family’s routine, the plan can be adjusted.

How quickly will I see results?

Progress in ABA therapy varies from child to child and depends on the goals being worked toward. Some skills develop quickly; others take time and consistent repetition. Setting realistic expectations from the start makes the process more manageable and helps you recognize and celebrate the milestones as they come, including the small ones.

Will my child have a consistent therapist?

Consistency matters in ABA therapy. The relationship between your child and their therapist builds trust that makes the work more effective. ATG maintains manageable caseloads for all BCBAs and RBTs so your child works with the same team consistently throughout their program.
